It is highly likely that when you are staying in North West Slovenia you will want to explore well the beautiful surroundings. When I usually plan an itinerary I try to check what interests me in all directions of the compass. So in this case we travelled North West from our accommodation in Žirovnica and made our way to the region of Carinthia, in Austria. Here are some of the places to visit and things to do in this beautiful region in Southern Austria:
Villach
Villach was just 40 mins away from where we were staying and we decided to start our day here. It was a Sunday morning and it was very calm and quiet, even though Villach is the eighth largest city in Austria. Our days abroad start very early in the morning, so we were there by 8am(ish). We visited during the local festival and everywhere was beautifully decorated with stalls all over the place. Villach is a very nice town, not too busy yet there are a lot of shops, restaurants and cafeterias you can go to. The main centre is Hauptplatz and this beautiful square is surrounded by pastel coloured buildings. You can also enjoy a walk along the Drava river that passes through the centre of the city. You can decide to spend your entire day here or else just visit for a short stop and continue to visit other areas in the region.
Weissensee
This is one of the most picturesque places I have ever visited. At first impact it reminded me of Hallstatt; since this village is located right next by the lake. However this valley is much wider. You can swim or rent a canoe to go on the lake which has very clear waters. For more information on things you can do in Weissensee you can visit the official tourism website here. An interesting stop after visiting Nassfeld can be Gailtal Bauer, especially if you have kids. This is a modern farm with several animals like goats, cows, pigs, chickens etc. You can enjoy a tour on the farm, pet the animals and also taste some of their products that include milk, cheeses and several kind of salamis.
Nassfeld
Nassfeld is a skiing resort located right on the border between Austria and Italy. In fact the border is located right at the top of this pass. There are lots of things to do in this place as you can imagine. Nassfeld is a very family friendly destination as there are several parks for children like the Aqua trail, Outdoor parks with Zip lines, Quad adventures and even Llama trekking. You can easily spend your entire holiday here as there are lots of things to do. We only stopped here for half a day and we enjoyed walking along the numerous mountain lakes in the area. If you are interested in knowing more about this skiing resort you can visit the official website of Nassfeld with a heaps of ideas, even for the most adventurous travellers.
